Thing #11 - LibraryThing

Take a look around LibraryThing and create an account.
Add a least 5 books to your library.
Blog about your findings and be sure to link to your LibraryThing catalog.

I added the last five books I read. Unfortunately, two other books were not located. Here is the link to my catalog:

Step # 10 - Web 2.0 and Libraries

Read two or three of the perspectives on Library 2.0 from the list. I read a number of the articles.

Create a blog post about your thoughts on any one of these?
I agree with Michael Stephens about using technology to help our patrons access information - it is the right thing to do. Giving librarians time at work to play, learn and develop these tools is essential.

Rick Anderson and I agree with his statement that "No profession can survive if it throws out its core principles and values overboard in response to every shift in the zeitgeist." Librarians do need to continue to keep up with technology. Yet we must still keep up with print resources, as our usage clearly indicates it is what our patrons still want.

Library 2.0 - It's many things to many people. What does it mean to you?
It means using technology to expand the horizons of staff and reach out to patrons who use these new forms of communication. Information access is increasing, librarians must keep up with all ways to access that information.

I do think that librarians must keep our traditional roles as keepers of good, reliable, up-to-date information. Organizing information is something the Internet has not been able to do yet. Libraries moving in to this area will help with organizing the material for our patrons.

Step # 9 - More RSS

I added two more public library feeds to my bloglines account.

LibWorm: Public Libraries (10) (0)
Muhlenberg County Public Libraries *Reader's Roost* (5)

Then I added the Grand Rapids Public Library Blog - The Atrium

Step # 8 Creating RSS Feeds

Here is my Bloglines RSS account. I have a number of subscriptions to online newspapers and other blogs, so this sure is easier.

Here are additional RSS accounts by other staff.

Think about these questions:
What do you like about RSS and newsreaders? It pulls a lot of resources together. How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work or personal life? It will make it easier to keep track of a wealth of information. How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this new technology? Book lists, program information and specialized information can be added very easily.

The library of Alexandria, Egypt, housed a museum and held more than 400,000 papyrus scrolls of text. Copying facilities allowed scrolls to be copied and disseminated, which preserved thousands of texts that would otherwise have been lost in the fires set by enemies.
